Marcia MacMillan, Anchor of CTV News Channel’s DIRECT, and the Association of Electronic Journalists RTDNA Award winner shares some of career advice and personal insights in our Quickfire Q+A.


What traits are you most inspired by in professional women?

Wisdom, confidence and the ability to stay calm in the storm.

Who were your role models growing up?

My mother, grandmother, and my Grade 4 and 5 teachers.

Who are your role models now?

Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Hillary Clinton and a few of my older female friends who would prefer to remain anonymous!

What are your greatest strengths?

Sensitivity and compassion.

What skill(s) are you still working on?

Asking for what I want.

What are you most known for?

My sense of humour and loyalty.

What would you like to be remembered by?

Being kind, fair and with high standards.

What has been the most incredible professional lesson you’ve learnt?

Tomorrow is another day.

What advice do you have for young women in your field?

Stay focused on your dreams and don’t listen to the naysayers. Ever.

What do you wish you knew 15 years ago?

Not to take everything so seriously.

Whose life would you like to live for a day?

Katie Couric.

What is they key to balancing work and life?

Create a pie chart, divide it up among work, personal time, friends and family. Review it often. Also, listen to the voice that says you need a break and take it.

What is the solution to women’s advancement in the workforce?

Hard work.

What has been your greatest achievement?

Accomplishing what I set out to do when I was in Grade 6!

What do you want to accomplish?

Being the best person I can be in every aspect of my life.

What was your first job?

Salad girl. I was responsible for keeping the salad bar topped up. My palms were stained orange from cutting carrots.

How do you celebrate your successes?

I call my boyfriend and my mom, then it’s dinner out, or new shoes!
