Q: What qualities should a “power suit” possess?

Depending on the industry, it can be a great dress in a bold hue or tailored pantsuit in a modern silhouette. Its definition may be changing, but what remains true about the power suit is that it needs to—first and foremost—make a woman feel confident.

Q: Is it possible to incorporate denim into my work wardrobe?

If you incorporate it correctly, there’s no reason to fear Casual Fridays! You can complement almost any piece from your closet with a modern pair of jeans (like Jones New York’s Mercer Bootcut or Lexington Straight styles)—just make sure they are the perfect fit for your silhouette. Create a sophisticated look by adding a great blazer with strong tailored details, jewellery and a feminine heel or flat. The key is to make sure your denim is a dark wash to avoid looking too casual for the workplace.

Q: What tips do you have to confidently dress for success at an interview?

When you go into an interview always remember that it is as much about the organization as it is about you. The fit should be right—both for your outfit and your transition into the corporate environment. Research the company to get an idea of what the culture is like, so your outfit conveys your commitment to the role.

Q: As a young professional, what “investment pieces” should I look for to build a professional and stylish work wardrobe?

Investing in modern basics that you can mix and match is the most important aspect of building a wardrobe. Start by finding a great fitting classic dress pant, a crisp white dress shirt and a versatile cashmere cardigan. Another closet must-have is a tailored black suit that can be paired with either a slim pencil skirt or the perfect pant. Add a little black dress that can work under the jacket for day and accessorize with bold jewellery for a business dinner at night. From there, you can gradually add a couple of on-trend items to reflect your personal brand. Look for bright pops of colour and whimsical prints to refresh your wardrobe staples.

Q: How can I mix the latest Fall trends into my current work wardrobe?

Rich textures such as fur, tweeds, and leather are big this season, so incorporate them into your rotation for a modern take on classic pieces. Play with embellishments and above all, have fun with your outfit—being professional doesn’t mean being boring!
