2012 CWEA Finalist: Barb Gamey

Barb Gamey, President, Payworks

Barb Gamey is cofounder, President and CEO of Payworks, a national payroll service provider. The Payworks national service centre is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In the year 2000, and after 15 years of senior level experience in the payroll services industry, Ms. Gamey had significantly contributed to growth at a major Canadian payroll competitor. She recognized that there were gaps in the industry that would be addressed if she created a compelling value offering that encompassed the latest in computer technology combined with customer-centred service. Starting with desktop and later web-based technology, Payworks’ proprietary application was developed by people who truly understood the needs of the customer. Payworks now offers a suite of web-based workforce management solutions, including payroll, human resources management, and employee time management.

After 12 years operating her own business, Ms. Gamey recognizes that entrepreneurship requires both flexibility and a willingness to adapt in order to move successfully through various stages of growth in one’s business.  Payworks has twice been recognized as the only company in Manitoba to be named to the Deloitte Technology Fast 50™ ranking, in both 2009 and 2010.

Ms. Gamey believes that the richness and health of our communities greatly enhances the quality of life for everyone. Among other commitments, she is the past Chair of the Women’s Enterprise Centre of Manitoba’s Board of Directors. She also actively fundraises for Special Olympics Manitoba, sits on the Board of the Prairie Theatre Exchange Foundation, and participates extensively with the United Way of Winnipeg.
