When you shine a spotlight on an extraordinary woman you help all women to rise.

this is wHAT WE KNOW

Stories can inspire us, connect us, and teach us — about others, and about ourselves. They have the power to build empathy and reshape beliefs. When a story is told well, it can help us to overcome those old and persistent narratives that tell us there’s a limit to what women are capable of, and a list of what we should and shouldn’t do or be.  We believe if we can change the narrative, we can change the world.

We need more people sharing the stories of extraordinary women — so on International Women’s Day (March 8) we ignited a movement. Since celebrating women should happen more than one day a year, we need your help to keep it going. Together, we can all #ShineAndRise.

Three steps to #shineandrise

1

Pick your role model.

Think of a woman you admire. You may know her well, or you may have never met her — but her story inspires you, and could inspire others.

2

Share her story.

Share her story on Twitter and/or Instagram. Post with the hashtag #shineandrise and tag @WOIGlobal so we can reshare. Get tips on how to share and what to say below.

3

Grow the movement.

Challenge others to share their own #shineandrise story by tagging them. With your help, we can start a global movement that helps all women to rise.

let's talk details

Three ways to share her story

1.

Film a video.

You don’t need anything fancier than your phone! Our top tips: find a quiet spot to film, and think about what you’re going to say before shooting. If you’re making your video for Instagram, it has to be under 1 minute. On Twitter, you have up to 2 minutes 20 seconds.

You can challenge others in the video, but we also recommend tagging specific people in your post. Whose role model do you want to learn about?

2.

Create a simple post.

Hate being on video? Share an image (or a few) of your role model on Instagram or Twitter, and use the caption to introduce her to the world. Don’t forget to save some room to challenge others to #ShineAndRise, and tag @WOIGlobal so we can amplify your efforts.

We’ve made some social-ready images (just right click to download on desktop, or press and hold on your phone!) if you want to add them to your posts.

3.

Write it all out.

Have more to say than a few words? Get it all out!

We know it sometimes takes more than an Instagram comment to get across all the reasons your role model is amazing, and how she inspires you. Take these examples as a guide — but don’t feel limited.  Post the article on your own channel, but don’t forget to share the link on social so we can amplify!

What should your story say?

  • Start by introducing who you want to shine a spotlight on. You can share her name and professional title, or summarize who she is and what she does.
  • Highlight what makes her extraordinary. What are her big accomplishments? What makes her interesting? What would make people want to know more?
  • Share something that identifies her as an everyday woman. Our goal is to shine a spotlight, not build a pedestal — so what makes her relatable? Has she struggled before her triumph?
  • Share what impact she has had on your life and your career. Why is she a role model to you?
