Building A Multi-Million Dollar Brand: How Vivian Kaye Conquered An Industry
Meet Vivian Kaye, Founder & CEO of KinkyCurlyYaki, a premium textured hair extension brand for Black women that she bootstrapped to revenues of over $6 million as an immigrant, college dropout and single mom.
People have been trying to get Vivian Kaye to conform to preconceived societal standards since she was a kid. As a Ghanaian immigrant and one of four sisters, it was anticipated she would attend school, get a degree, and settle into a solid and stable career. Instead, this effervescent and empowering entrepreneur has built a career that defied all expectations and catapulted her to the top of an industry.
It all started in 2012 when Vivian identified a gap in the market for high-quality hair extensions that matched the natural hair texture of black women. Continually frustrated with the limited options available, she decided to make her own. The feedback from friends, family and strangers alike, was overwhelming.
Knowing very little about the business model, but confident in the quality of her product, Vivian took a leap and launched KinkyCurlyYaki — a first-of-its-kind, premium hair extension company for Black women. The risk paid off. In year one of operations, KinkyCurlyYaki generated half a million in revenues and the company now stands as the originator of an entire niche in the hair industry and has become so popular that companies are vying to replicate it.
With a genuine desire for continuous growth, there are no limits to Vivian’s vision. In the early days she organically grew her personal brand beyond that of a Founder & CEO and built a global platform by pulling back the curtain to exchange the tips and tricks critical to her success. Today she’s built an all-out entrepreneurial empire that includes: a business and empowerment consulting firm; the ‘Build it Braver from American Express ’ podcast; and as a media personality herself often appearing on TV and radio and partnering with prestige brands. Her ultimate goal? To inspire audiences into taking action and leverage their authentic selves into building the brand of their dreams.
