Million Dollar Idea(s): Meet Michele Romanow, the ‘Dragons’ Den’ Disruptor with an Eye for Opportunity
Michele Romanow, "Dragon", CBC Dragons’ Den | Co-Founder, Clearbanc
"There is something indescribable about watching your ideas become tactile – I can now hold something that was a thing of imagination.” - Michele Romanow
Listed as the only Canadian on Forbes “Millennial on a Mission” list, Michele Romanow is a powerful force shaping the digital economy landscape. By the age of 33, Michele had built four successful businesses that have impacted millions of digital users. Her business acumen and flair for innovation have landed her in circles with the world’s biggest moguls. Michele is the youngest resident judge to join CBC’ hit show “Dragon’s Den” and she recently shared a stage with Jack Ma of Alibaba in a panel discussion. Her advice is sought after as a Director on the boards of Vail Resorts, Shad Valley, Freshii, League of Innovators and BlockX.
How has she become so successful at a young age? By identifying ways to disrupt the digital economy.
After graduating with an engineering degree from Queen’s University and launching her first two businesses, Michele took a strategy job at Sears and quickly noticed a digital shift in consumer purchasing. She launched Buytopia in 2011, a dealfinding e-commerce site that by 2013 had 2.5 million subscribers and had provided over $100 million in shopper savings. The company was ranked #3 on the Profit Hot 50 list and #1 on Chatelaine’s W100 list of fastest growing companies.
Michele then launched SnapSaves, a mobile couponing app which further capitalized on changing trends in retail shopping by digitizing traditional paper coupons. SnapSaves was purchased by Groupon in 2014, and rebranded in the U.S. as Snap by Groupon.
Beyond her career as an entrepreneur, Michele is passionate about helping new entrepreneurs bring their ideas to fruition. Her latest venture, Clearbanc, provides entrepreneurs with business loans based on data insights rather than personal finance records, allowing entrepreneurs with less-than-ideal financial backgrounds to avoid discrimination and lack of funding to successfully grow their ideas. This year, Clearbanc estimates they will lend over $100 million, which is more than most Canadian venture capital funds will provide in over four years.
Join us on October 31st for this exciting opportunity to meet the woman who is changing the technology landscape for global consumers and providing a platform for entrepreneurs to transform their million dollar ideas from something of their imagination to something they can hold.
