Ginella Massa, CityNews Toronto


Two years ago, Ginella Massa became the first news reporter to wear a hijab on television. Last year she made even bigger headlines when, by filling in as the late anchor on CityNews Toronto, she became the first woman in hijab to ever anchor a major newscast in Canada.

The image — a vibrant, young Muslim woman on the evening news — sent waves throughout the country, as Ginella inspired a nation to recognize what true diversity looks like, and a generation of young women to be bolder, speak louder, and to make their presence known.

In the past year, Ginella has been featured in Vogue, The New York Times, VICE Canada, The Washington Post, and allure. But how did she summon the courage, confidence, and conviction to take what is sure to become one of the most defining moves in her career?

She made history again in 2016 when she filled in as the late anchor on CityNews Toronto, making her the first woman in hijab to ever anchor a major newscast in Canada.  Ginella has worked in broadcast news for more than 7 years, both behind-the-scenes and on-air for local and national Canadian news outlets, including CityNews, CTV,  NEWSTALK 1010, and Rogers Television.

    Ginella has been published in the Globe and Mail and National Post, often writing about issues affecting Muslims in North America. She is passionate about getting Muslim community groups to better engage with news outlets and help them tell their own stories.[/woitab]
