“Purdy Crawford may be best remembered, not for his role in leading conglomerate Imasco or the Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt law firm, but for saving ordinary investors from losing their shirts in the collapse of the market for non-bank asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP) in 2007.
With five daughters among his six children, he was determined to provide opportunities, mentorship and support for women in business. Former Home Depot chief executive Annette Verschuren, who hails from Cape Breton and was offered a job by Mr. Purdy after he heard her make a presentation (at age 28) to the Devco board, described him this week as ‘pure equity, pure fairness, pure integrity.'”
