Visionary entrepreneur and Calgary native Karen Brookman launched her first business, Commonwealth Legal, as a small start-up in 2000. Over the next 14 years she strategically positioned the organization for incredible growth and became recognized as a pioneer and industry leader for electronic evidence management. The business disrupted the way lawyers managed large lawsuits by introducing technology automation to manage document intensive cases.
Commonwealth Legal expanded across Canada and in June 2014 the company was acquired by Ricoh Canada, a subsidiary of the global technology giant that boasts annual worldwide sales of over 21 billion USD. The deal was a massive win but introduced a new set of challenges for Karen and her team: Would it be possible to maintain the entrepreneurial spirit and agility that had made the company successful now that it was part of a large corporate entity? What type of leadership would be needed to ensure a successful integration and transition?
Karen has a unique perspective on the journey from entrepreneur, to corporate executive and change agent, back to entrepreneur. Not only did she build a successful business from the ground up, but then lead Commonwealth Legal through a transition that resulted in the company growing more than 40% in the first two years after being acquired. In addition, Karen championed women’s initiatives to help advance women in the workplace and to create an environment where “women can have their ‘all’, whatever their all is.
Today, Karen is embarking on a new chapter that will take her full circle back to her entrepreneurial roots, and has recently returned to Calgary to join her family’s business, West Canadian Digital Imaging.
