Women’s Day Live

March 8th, 2013

“…the jury is in, the evidence is absolutely indisputable: If women and girls everywhere were treated as equal to men in rights, dignity, and opportunity, we would see political and economic progress everywhere. So this is not only a moral issue, which, of course, it is. It is an economic issue and a security issue, and it is the unfinished business of the 21st century.”

-Hillary Clinton, January 31 2013, at the Council on Foreign Relations

Imagine a future in which all of humanity is achieving its potential, and men and women everywhere are working together as equals, standing shoulder to shoulder to face the considerable challenges of an increasingly global society.

There has never been such a confluence of international attention being given to the urgent need to help women and girls realize their potential for the benefit of humanity. So where will we find the political will to accomplish this?

Since 2006, when President Bill Clinton asked Lili Fournier to take her idea for a historic global celebration of the women of the world and to make it a Clinton Global Initiative Commitment, WOMEN’S DAY LIVE has been gathering steam, recruiting strategic partners and coming closer to realizing the dream of this bold and exciting vision.

The mission of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) is to turn ideas into action.    Every year it convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

THE WOMEN’S DAY LIVE mission is to galvanize a global movement to empower women and girls with education, technology and economic opportunity.

WOMEN’S DAY LIVE (WDL) will create a breakthrough global multi-media social action campaign that will harness the power of the global media, celebrity and technology with a series of real-world events

bringing together key stakeholders to accelerate the advancement of women’s social, economic and political participation in the world today.

The WOMEN’S DAY LIVE initiative will culminate with a international music festival and a spectacular multi-venue benefit concert broadcast live worldwide from seven major cities:  Join a million women coming together on the National Mall, Washington D.C., with millions more on Copacabana Beach, Rio; Toronto; Mumbai; Kigali; Rome and Beijing.

WOMEN’S DAY LIVE will be the largest live media event the world has ever seen, linking small stages and online communities 24 hours live around the world.  Imagine the excitement!  Join us on International Women’s Day, March 8th, 2014.

The event will feature the world’s leading artists and visionaries, who will connect millions of people worldwide to celebrate over a century of progress for the women of the world.  This will be the biggest-ever interactive link among women attending hundreds of events around the world, and millions more online.

International Women’s Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide; 35 countries have made it a national holiday, including China, Rwanda and Russia. One thousand self-created events took place last year.

WOMEN’S DAY LIVE Patron, Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, invites us to celebrate women in every city planet-wide and to seize the clear opportunity to make poverty history by empowering women and girls in the world today.

This unprecedented gathering of women on this one day, around the world, may well be the needed catalyst, the spark that will ignite and unite women and men in an unstoppable global movement to empower women and girls – the most potent force for global economic growth.

We will launch HEART IN ACTION to unite people around the world in a groundbreaking global humanitarian campaign, open to all charities and aid organizations — people helping people.

The Emmy award-winning WDL production team will deliver an exhilarating and epic event.    Just as Martin Luther King spoke of his dream of equality for his people on the Washington Mall on that historic day in 1963, future generations will remember March 8, 2014, as the day that changed the future for the world’s women and girls.  Now it’s time for women and girls to realize their dream.

The cause of Women is the cause of the 21st Century.

WOMEN’S DAY LIVE will leverage resources and proven strategies to achieve maximum global impact:

* Catalyze a campaign to build a long-term, sustainable model of social change philanthropy.

* Create a dynamic global communications network that will harness the power of technology, providing the tools for large-scale organization, sustainable fund-raising and global advocacy.

The women are gathering around world to celebrate women’s progress and to help implement the 21st-century solutions so vital to creating a just and sustainable future.   Join us on March 8th, 2014 to align and unite women’s voices, power and leadership.
